breakfast hasselback sweet potatoes + friday links

putting sriracha on it, spreading it with nutella, covering it with sprinkles... these are a few of the elite actions that i keep in my back pocket for when i need to a) salvage a dish that i royally screwed up, b) elevate something that would otherwise be just a little bit too basic, or c) recover from reading too much heavy news. to this list i would like to add: hasselbacking. so jolly, so easy to do, and it looks so cool! you can hasselback a lot of things: salami, zucchini, tomatoes. the original, of course, is the potato, so today over on the west elm blog, i have hasselbacked a sweet potato and added bacon and eggs to make it a perfect little pocket-sized brunch. go check it out!!

eggboy and i are off to chicago for a bit! we'll be celebrating stoopie's birthday, having our first of two thanksgivings (!!!), and i'll be going inside of the tv to be a jennie-o turkey girl! it does not involve me dressing like a turkey, unfortunately, but i will be demonstrating some fun thanksgiving sides and desserts on air. i can't wait! i'm nervous and excited and praying that i don't accidentally tell the anchor to please toss this salad. so if you live in chicago, tune in on monday and tuesday morning! i'll be tweeting exact channels and air times.

have a great weekend everyone!!!!

through lydia's lens

my friend lydia is one of the most delightful and talented people i know. we met when she was my orientation leader at juilliard, and since graduation we've kept in touch through a shared love of photography, food, and janna gur. she's also secretly my style icon because belieb me, if i could wear dark lipstick like hers without it getting all up in my teeth, i would.

when i was in new york a few weeks ago, she and i strolled around with brian, and we ate and ate. first israeli food, then mac and cheese pancakes, buffered by matcha lattes and kenny shopsin being kenny shopsin. the whole day was magical because even though the three of us left new york after juilliard, there we were, back in the city on the same beautiful day with nowhere to be but with each other. (sorry, i get all mushy with little college reunions like these!!)

later, lydia and i stopped in lincoln center for some shots on their new bridge over 65th street. we reminisced about our years there, how insane they were, and how much we loved them despite the insanity. it was nice to be back, if only for a moment.

all of these shots were taken by lydia. go check out more of her work, i love it so much!!! especially these farm shots.

naptime in a bed of stuffing

you know, for how good stuffing tastes, you'd think it'd dress a little nicer for the occasion. it always looks so disheveled and unkempt, like please, we are at an event, would it have killed you to run a brush through your hair? (i guess i shouldn't talk?) it was probably stuffing's beat up homeless look that kept me from trying it for the first approximately 18 years of my life. if someone had told me that it's just bread with a few harmless vegetables and tons and tons of fat, i would have been all in.

maybe that was my family's plan all along: keep molly alienated from the stuffing so that there's more for us.

oh well, they won!

but now i'm making up for lost time. i've been dipping my toes in these past few years with challah stuffingsufganiyot stuffing, and a soon-to-come bagel stuffing, and now i'm thinking i'm grown-up enough to make a boozy one. it's inspired by shelly's pretzel panzanella, it references my past life as a mustard collector, and it requires you to open a can of beer, pour a little bit into the stuffing, and then pour a lotta bit into your mouth because what is a giant dora the explorer float without a slight buzz anyway? oh, and bacon!!!!! duh.

this recipe is over on jones dairy farm's stuffing microsite! it might be one of the jolliest sites ever, because my stuffing is cozied up next to outrageous things like cinnamon roll stuffing and hawaiian sweet bread stuffing and a bagillion other casseroles of love that i just want to take a nap in once i'm all tryptophanned out and ready to explode.

thanksgiving is in 15 days people!!!!!!!!!!! get jazzed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pinot noir marshmallows + a bonfire

over the radio, jeremy played his goldberg variations and out the window, a large flock of birds flew all oblong-like in that pretty way that birds do. i kept looking left and looking right to check for people and other cars, but there was never anyone else, not even on the highway.

it was like being on another planet or in another time, but no, it was just north dakota being all zen and unassuming.

i ended up at my friend evan's ranch, where we lit a fire in an old tractor part, and pet the cows as the sun set. we roasted weenies and talked about china, told our halloween stories and fed the doggies. i had s'mores and a sausage and it was the perfect sunday supper, or just the perfect sunday in general: all cozy and animal-filled.

i do love a good bonfire.

the crackly sounds. cooking things on sticks. driving back into town, stopping at the target, and smelling like a smokey burnt up log.

bonfires almost make me want to delay the first real snowfall. almost.

here was our little fireside menu:

for noshing // leftover halloween candy

for melting // s'mores with pinot noir marshmallows

for roasting // bourbon smoked sausages and hot dogs

for sipping // kendall-jackson grand reserve pinot noir

thanks so much to kendall-jackson for sponsoring this post!!!! all opinions are my own!
