lunch

the day i overdosed on food.

if i made a list of everything that i ate today, you would be shocked. i would be grossed out. the world would explode.
so take cover because i'm going to do just that...
the following was eaten between the hours of noon and 5pm today, at the new york city wine and food festival:
a tongue slider, a bacon cheeseburger, tater tots filled with bacon, a bacon egg roll, vanilla ice cream with wasabi dust, a sprinkle cookie, two ham and cheese crepes, a lamb sandwich, a lamb taco, a korean taco, another taco, bone marrow and oxtail marmalade on brioche, vanilla mousse, a chocolate caramel cupcake, tater salad, a super spicy kati roll, pork on rice, lamb and figs on couscous, a fluffer nutter cookie sandwich, a falafel wrap, a blondie, a mexican chocolate brownie, a peanut butter and jelly cookie sandwich, about six other unidentified sandwiches...
and to wash it all down i had egg creams, vodka, cherry vodka, wine, smart water, and milk shakes.
stuffed is an understatement.
like,
pop my belly with that tooth pick of yours and watch midtown get rained on by tacos.
it was disneyland.
disneyland times trader joe's plus the barney's warehouse sale divided by kenmare's new york times rating.
disneyland with booze and pat lafrieda things...
populated by andrew zimmern, ming tsai, an anderson twin, chef spike, jeffrey chodorow,
the super hunk that is tyler florence...
schnitzel friends, the midtown lunch man...
and the most wonderful girl behind this amazing blog {all the way from miami!!}
so. don't mind me, i'll be at the salad bar for the next month...
but it's ok because it was worth every stretch mark!

week 34: los huaraches

i'm proud. so proud of my little neighborhood.
all of the dry-cleaners and the gas stations and the juicy couture are officially worth enduring for this itsy-bitsy place i stumbled upon a few days ago:
i don't know a thing about it.
i don't know when it opened...
it's sort of dumpy,
but  if there's anything new york has taught me besides how to sweet talk my corner pastry stand guy into giving me a free donut,
it's to embrace the little dumpy places!
so mum and i did just that and gorged on tortas that picked us up right where xoco's left off last week.
we got a
hawaiian torta
pineapples, ham, cheese, avocados, mayo{?}, jalapenos, tomaters, and onions
and a
chickens torta
chickens {cluck cluck}, avocado, tomaters, onions, jalapenos, beans {?}, mayo {?}, and no cheese {sad pandas sad pandas}
and girls, this is what a torta should be.
i apologize for not confirming the localness of the chickens,
but how can you say no to pillow soft, buttery, almost focaccia-y bread?
and omg. hawaiian torta. it really is as good as it sounds. for a fruit that sort of freaked the begeezies out of me until a few months ago, pineapple is kind of winning.
maybe the taco truck outside of my apartment will let me pitch this idea to them.
and
of course:
horchata
horchata!
my fave! with overtones of bubblicious that almost had the marshmallow peep effect, but a horchata nonethefewer.
...
well by gum. this place. it's oggle-worthy. who knew a torta of this caliber could be found out here in the stix?
it's like glenda the good witch's magical bubble just appeared out of nowhere and then burst open with magic and pink and beans. and everyone is gleeful.
and lunch is fun again.

...18 to go, señor sillies!

los huaraches is on milwaukee, a bit north of lake. in the north suburbs of chicago!

bánh mì at home

in life,
the best way to really screw yourself over,
is to realize your craving for bánh mì after you've boarded a plane to leave new york and go to illinois for a month.
{because apparently the deli counter at the jewel-osco has yet to experience this phenomenon. no offense}
but since mum and i have been crafty little minxes lately,
we made our own!!
we found this food network recipe,
schlepped to the super h market,
and only had mild conniption{s} when the request for vietnamese-style pork roll was met with confusion, speechlessness, and ultimately a recommendation to substitute it for corn dogs made from fish, or grutinous rice balls.
whatever.
oscar meyer to the rescue.
and just like that, three more types of pork wiggled their way into our house...
and legit bánh mìs were accomplished!!
these were really, really, go-to-the-back-of-a-jewelry-store {r.i.p} legit ...crises averted.
so, if your bánh mì depot is nonexistent, get your paws on some daikon and make these!

week 26: katz's delicatessen

when it is two in the morning and you are on the lower east side and you're confused because because just a few moments ago you were on the upper west side at harry's burritos and you just got off the phone with your best friend's dad because you tried calling your best friend but instead his dad answered and you are not quite sure who is more drunk, and somebody just asked you which way to the cruise ship, you know that something fantastic is about to happen:

you are going to eat a katz's pastrami sandwich.

omg.

it wasn't my idea.
it was sam's.
he's my favorite.
and when him and i were the last ones standing in a monumental evening of inebriation,
we decided this was our prize.
{last one to vom wins a sandwich!}
here is what i recall:

-thinking there would be a long wait
-there not being a long wait
-being confused about where to order
-receiving a free sample of pastrami while we waited
-ordering a pastrami sandwich and matzoh ball soup
-having an easy time finding a place to sit
-sam eating all of the pickles
-me being ok with it
-getting mad at sam for stealing my soup crackers
-sam repeating,
ohmygod this is amazing
while he stuffed his face
-bread so so so sooo soft, softer than any rye i've ever had
-being confused over which is better:
millburn or katz?
-medium warm medium good matzoh ball soup
-being confused about where to pay
-trying to pay with card
-having to pay with cash
-confusion about tipping
-just... general confusion, but extreme satisfaction
-wanting more

next time?

katz: the sober edition!
but first...
26 more to go!!
i'm halfway there!!!

xoxo
