jewish and israeli food

week 7: lederhosen

subtitle: your spätzle are rubber bands, so let's drown our sorrows.

one of my very best friends, rob, is a near-pescetarian.
meaning,
he's a vegetarian,
but he eats fish.
and the "near" part because,
one day a week,
he indulges in the land animal.

and so i knew we would be perfect valentines for each other when he professed his affection for me by saying,
"i'm saving my meat day for you, baybay"
that's true love, if you ask me.

so, obviously, it was either burgers or schnitzels.
and it just so happened that i was due for a schnitzel.

and so the rob and i navigated about the tiny streets of the west village
until we happened upon
lederhosen
...hidden in a little basement of one of those beautiful west village townhousey things.

it was so much like entering a german beer house,
that rob and i actually broke out in our best german talky
{we are, after all, scholars of the language}
we were immediately hushed up by our
sassy "i left germany for a reason and don't want to sprechen the deutsch with you" waitress.

sure, frau, sure.

ok,
so i got:
chickens schnitzel
+
spätzle
+
can you substitute that pickled stuff for more spätzle?
no.

{clockwise from top: pickled shit that no one really eats anyways,
rubber patty,
rubber bands}

rob got:
pork schnitzel
a la holstein = with an egg on top
+
taters
+
pickled shit

ditto on the rubber.

i'll spare you details,
but the evening was saved by four things:

1. the massive mural of pretty germany mountains,
complete with scaled down painting of neuschwanstein,
and cows.
2. the happiness and beer-garden-y ambiance that would make it a very pleasant place to trinken a bier with friends.
{a.k.a. i'd go back to this place, but only after dinner...}

3. my pretty jimmies heart that i crafted in my milk during dessert at milk & cookies.
4. rob {duh}

i mean,
a bad schnitzel had to happen sooner or later.
good thing i have 45 more restaurants to go!!

lederhosen is located at bleecker and grove in the west village.
milk & cookies is located at commerce and 7th ave in the west village.

why i love roomies.

more than a dissonant chord,
more than the ding at the end of your ten minute massage at the nail salon,
more than, for heaven sakes, death cab for cutie,

one of the saddest sounds in this world,
is the sound of a mustard jar shattering on the floor of your kitchen.
especially of a new one that has never been used.

but
more than a puppy,
more than nutella,
and even more than the seed itself,
one of the happiest things in this world,
is finding your roomies
diligently salvaging your mustard,
being careful not to touch the parts that touched the floor,
not to even come close to the broken glass,
and spooning it into a cute little tupperware container.

i love you,
 timmy and chaddington bear.

what i am loving now

1. green jimmies
2. afternoon or early evening sits
{often with a journal}

3. caramel mustard from auntie lucy

4. happening upon tiny old fashioned barber shops on side streets in the village
5. sack lunches at the museum
6. creamed honey
7. running into old friends at the starbucks, on the subway... them giving me suggestions on which restaurants to add to my list
8. mathieu dufour deciding not to go to LA and to stay with the chicago symphony! yay!

9. late night cannolis,
apple cake,
and almond flavored soda
at a little cafe with my favorite alli

10. dr. bronner's almond scented soap... just slather me with marzipan why don't you
11. not having to wear blush,
because the cold and the wind do the job for me

have a wonderful weekend!
wear your mittens :-)

things i ate in 2009.

the good:

-primanti brothers in pittsburgh
that's where this picture is from, and yes those are french fries in the sandwich!
-zingerman's in ann arbor
they actually employ someone whose sole job it is to travel around the world, searching for the best cheese. i had some of the best swiss cheese on a turkey sandwich with guacamole.
-the mac and cheese sandwich from the milburn deli
all of their sandwiches made on soft buttery croissants with the tastiest of cheeses
-loeb-wiches at tanglewood

i didn't only eat sandwiches.
the above were partly from u.s. summer sandwich tour 09 that i took in june with friend rob.
i also ate:

and more dumplings,
and more dumplings,
and, yeah, more dumplings
including pumpkin dumplings!

-my first sushi
-my first scallop
-my first steak
-my first pineapple {i know, don't judge}

-a macarella from the street sweets truck
nutella sandwiched by two coconut macaroons
-tim tams and tim tam slams with the roomies
-in-n-out burger with the pops

the bad:

-the parmageddon from melt in ohio
two pierogis, vodka kraut, onions, cheese, more butter than your life
-escargot
-a monumental amount of cheese whiz

the best:

-some of the best mexican food EVER at la fachada in san diego
-the gobbler from the milburn deli
fresh carved turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, lettuce, mayo on soft rye
-difara pizza in brooklyn
which mum and i waited TWO HOURS for
-basil gelato at whisknladle in la jolla

-schnitzel, and more schnitzel

...more mustard than i can begin to name
but one highlight was the RIDICULOUSLY hot one from mcsorley's ale house in the east village

and things i would like to eat in 2010:

-ethiopian food
that truck haunts me every other week. i swear, it KNOWS when i don't have any cash on me.
-the egg from ramen setagaya that made time out new york's best food of '09 list
...to see what all that nonsense is about...
-more bad things
i think i could improve on that list for next year. any suggestions for some terrible food?

happy 2010 everybody!!
