tomato sourdough soup + a giveaway

some weeks go by here when i can count the amount of times that i go outside on one hand. (sorry, vitamin d levels.) i'm usually on the way to one of five places:

1. target

2. the farmhouse

3. the egg parents' house (to eat soup and watch blu-ray)

4. the back of the bakery (to make macaroons)

5. the front of the bakery (to fetch day-old sourdough)

i'm past worrying about what my social skills have sunk to, i think they're just beyond help. it's not that i'm a totally lame friendless doofus, eggboy and i just get into these patterns where we work work work until we can work no longer and then we realize that we haven't showered in days and in that moment pizza delivery and vikings seem way friendlier than putting on deodorant and sitting in public.

*i know, i know*

today i'm addressing reason number 5 for going outside. it's a fun thing to do. the bakery that i work at makes a killer sourdough and i can trust that i'm not going to get completely judged for popping in and out wearing turquoise velour pants, dark green wellies, a hooded sweatshirt of another shade of green, and a big black parka, in 60 degree weather.

the reason for my fashionably intensive sourdough runs is usually so that i can make this soup that i'm obsessed with. it's the tomato sourdough soup from jerusalem and the best way i can describe it is that it's just like eating a bowl of that yummy stuff you scrape from the bottom and sides of a bread bowl. really really soggy bread that just melts into the soup in the best most delightful way possible.

since eggboy won't go near its gluten-y qualities, i've reduced the recipe to an easy single serving that doesn't leave me with a bathtub full of things that i (and only i) need to eat before we move. it's super simple and fast and comforting and a great way to use up your bread before passover starts! wahhhh!

tomato-sourdough-soup-10.jpg

single serving tomato sourdough soup

based on yotam ottolenghi's recipe from jerusalem

ingredients

1 tb olive oil

1/2 small onion, chopped

1/2 tsp cumin

1 clove garlic, minced

1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes

salt + pepper

1 tsp sugar

1/2 c vegetable broth

1 slice sourdough, ripped into pieces

2 tsp chopped cilantro

clues

heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. cook the onion until it's soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. add the cumin and garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

add the tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste, sugar, and broth, and bring to a boil. reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. add the sourdough and simmer for 5 more minutes. (if the soup gets too thick because of the sourdough, add a bit more broth.)

add the cilantro and whiz it up in a blender, keeping it a little bit chunky, if desired. enjoy in a super cute mug...

but wait, this all gets better! do you see this mug that the soup is in? the one that's giving you smiley eye? it--he--could be yours! he's one of only 50 and he's handmade in brooklyn by helen levi and sold through of a kind, an awesome site with cool stuff from emerging designers. go on, little mug, give us a twirl:

i am very jealous of whoever wins him because can't you imagine how wonderful soup for one would be with this little guy by your side?

to enter this giveaway, sign up for the of a kind newsletter and then tell me what would be the first thing you'd enjoy out of this mug! i'll choose a winner at random next week!

update 4.21.2014: a giveaway winner has been chosen!

about last weekend: i remember cousin russell telling stoop and me what the goal for the bar tab was and then i remember getting off a plane three days later at o'hare and seeing an old schoolmate dash up the escalator with his cello.

in between was fuzzy, but i do know this: there was boogying, there was a sundae bar, there was a man who airbrushed "eggboy" and a picture of a chihuahua onto a t-shirt for me. and that much family in one place at one time? oh it really doesn't get much better than that. it didn't matter that approximately 12 people over the course of the weekend thought i was 16 years old, i still did my part in helping cousin russell reach his bar tab goal, with a side of one more caviar toast, please. (i mean...?!)

recovery came in the form of a little day trip to sarasota to celebrate george's birthday on the beach with some very delightful homies. we played bean bags and ate quiche, we gossiped, we avoided sunburn.

an a plus weekend. and now on to the next!! but first, some links...

i can't stop staring at samantha lee's instagram feed. i wonder if she'd take my request for a lorde onigiri?

gimme all the matcha cakes!

if you don't hear from me next week it's because i am busy eating bacon matzoh brei.

a hunt for smiles in new york.

black sesame macarons are my favorite macarons, and these ones have nutter butter filling.

just a little reminder that it's been entirely too long since i had a bakewell tart.

rosemary + citrus, wins every time.

i'm gonna kidnap some of eggboy's soybeans next harvest so that i can make homemade tofu.

remember that time i discovered how cute yonkers is? the fruits of that labor are now on the internet and it is so groovy!

macaroon season is upon on us!!!!! pistachio macaroon granola bars, macaroons that use coconut chips, lemon meringue macaroons, macaroon bread! oh my oh my oh my.

i made a grilled chicken version of these korean tacos last night and they were the tops.

a regular rumpelstiltskin as a bread maker, that was my favorite imagery this week.

pretzel crusted pie (!)

why have i never had a tres leches cake before?

my recipe for peeps (along with ways to make them boozy and herby and green tea-y) is up on food52.

tuba bonfire.

happy weekend, everybody!!

red velvet coconut macaroon cake

macaroon cake-3.jpg
macaroon cake-5.jpg
macaroon cake-11.jpg

we started packing last night. i'm currently sitting in a sea of boxes filled with books i've been meaning to read and clothes i haven't worn since my city days and we're about to tape them up and bring them down the road to the farm because by the end of the month, i'll officially not have to write an apartment number after my address and i'll officially *really* live in the middle of nowhere.

eggboy and i have conversations these days that center around things like garbage disposals as birthday presents, who is going to mow the lawn (the goats), and do we really want such a dark stain for our floors (do we??), it's real live grown-up stuff.

well, in my mind, it's pretty much the same thing as building those lego houses that i used to be so good at, only this is going to be better because we actually get to put that hard work to use and live in the thing. is it a terrible idea to want to paint one of the bathrooms the pantone color of the year and plan on repainting it for each new color of the year? if not, what is a good color for a bathroom?

i'm sort of daunted by the task of packing up all of the jars and containers in my refrigerator and moving them quickly enough so that they don't go bad, and i'm a little bit worried about what unintended science experiments i'll find in the back... other than that though, these next few weeks will be a delightful time of packing and cleaning and hooking up the plumbing to our sink and trying to decide if i'm ever going to need my blazers and high heeled ankle boots out on the farm or if i should just give them away to make room for the new overalls that i plan on acquiring.

in other news: i made a red velvet coconut macaroon cake for the latest installment of molly on the range. it's basically one big ass coconut macaroon that you decorate like a cake, because any excuse for a cake, right? right. it's based on the macaroon recipe that i swear by, danny's, and if you are in need of ways to liven up your passover dessert table, this is the recipe for you!

pasties-4.jpg

cheese and onion hand pies

April 08, 2014 in recipe

it wasn't just the sun and the beach and the partying with dear ones that left me sad to see this weekend go, it was also about living in each moment as if i'd travelled back in time specifically to relive it. (an idea i picked up from watching the movie about time, which i'd highly recommend.) in other words, this weekend in florida, i loosened my cord to the internet world and reevaluated what's really important in life. the humans, the bonds, the hard work. i realized that a letter from f. scott fitzgerald to his daughter, which eggboy has pinned to the wall of his man cave, hits so many things right on the nose:

august 8, 1933

dear pie:

I feel very strongly about you doing duty. Would you give me a little more documentation about your reading in French? I am glad you are happy-- but I never believe much in happiness. I never believe in misery either. Those are things you see on the stage or the screen or the printed page, they never really happen to you in life.

All I believe in in life is the rewards for virtue (according to your talents) and the punishments for not fulfilling your duties, which are doubly costly. If there is such a volume in the camp library, will you ask Mrs. Tyson to let you look up a sonnet of Shakespeare's in which the line occurs Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds....

I think of you, and always pleasantly, but I am going to take the White Cat out and beat his bottom hard, six times for every time you are impertinent. Do you react to that?...

Half-wit, I will conclude. Things to worry about:

Worry about courage
Worry about cleanliness
Worry about efficiency
Worry about horsemanship...
Things not to worry about:
Don't worry about popular opinion
Don't worry about dolls
Don't worry about the past
Don't worry about the future
Don't worry about growing up
Don't worry about anybody getting ahead of you
Don't worry about triumph
Don't worry about failure unless it comes through your own fault
Don't worry about mosquitoes
Don't worry about flies
Don't worry about insects in general
Don't worry about parents
Don't worry about boys
Don't worry about disappointments
Don't worry about pleasures
Don't worry about satisfactions
Things to think about:
What am I really aiming at?
How good am I really in comparison to my contemporaries in regard to:
(a) Scholarship
(b) Do I really understand about people and am I able to get along with them?
(c) Am I trying to make my body a useful instrument or am I neglecting it?

With dearest love...

pasties-5.jpg

i had pasties on my mind last week when nothing else felt appetizing. but today these are pies, in honor of f. scott fitzgerald's daughter.

cheese and onion hand pies

makes 8 small pies

inspired by this lancashire cheese and onion pie

ingredients

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 medium onions, thinly sliced

kosher salt

black pepper

1/4 cup water

flour, for dusting

one batch of pie dough*

1/2 cup shredded cheese (i like using sharp cheddar)

1 large egg, slightly beaten

*i like this pie dough recipe (with the salt cut down to 1 1/2 teaspoons), but store-bought will also work

clues

in a large skillet, melt the butter over moderately low heat. add the onions with a good pinch of salt and a few turns of pepper and cook, stirring, until very soft, 7 to 10 minutes. increase heat to moderate, add the water, and cook until the water is evaporated and the onions are lightly caramelized. remove from heat.

preheat oven to 375º. line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

on a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie dough. cut out 4 1/2-inch circles and top each with 1 tablespoon of onion and 1 tablespoon of cheese. brush the edges with egg, fold them over, and seal with a fork. transfer to the baking sheet, poke a few holes in the tops, and brush the tops with egg.

bake until lightly browned, 25-30 minutes.

enjoy with mustard... for a picnic, perhaps!
