SCHNITZEL TRUCK

mum and i do this thing where we tend to eat a TON of wiener schnitzel. and by wiener schnitzel, i mean chicken schnitzel (we like to think we're being healthy-ish this way  (but let's get real, it's fried meat)).  it's this total obsession that we have.

i'll fly home and mum will be like, "aww you must have had a long day of traveling, you need a schnitzel."

or something terrible will happen like ikea ran out of all their swedish meatballs, and mum will be like, "hmmm.. only a schnitzel can cure this."

or something happy will happen like we found the perfect shoes and the only appropriate celebration will be schnitzel.

there's simply nothing better than a schnitzel.

our fave place in chicago is kuhn's

i mean, imagine my surprise when i moved to new york and a good schnitzel on the upper west side was nowhere to be found.

but guess what? I FOUND IT (with the help of mum's savvy tweeting skillz).

the schnitzel and things truck, based in brooklyn, just happened to be on its little way up the island at the same time that i was leaving school today. so, i mean, naturally, i had to try it (can we please ignore the fact that i piggied out on tortas and horchatas last night?)

it parked right in front of gray's papaya. my nose was confused.

i bounced up to the truck and started to tell the brotha workin it all about how excited i was to finally have a schnitzel and how i've been waiting for it to drive up here for months and how my mom who tweets.. blah blah blah, and when i realized he didn't give a shit, i ordered my chicken schnitzel sandwich. with pesto mayo and ginger/scallion/garlic relish. oh. and yukon gold fries. oopsies.

it was so good.

it was a different experience from the sit down with mum, which always involves spaetzle and paprika sauce.

but it was fried just right, the bread was fresh and delicious, and the sauces were amazing. perfect texture, perfect seasoning, perfect everything. oy vey. and the fries? oh snap. pommes frites, you've got competition.

needless to say, i am satisfied.

go schnitzel truck!!!

oh if only writing my paper tonight could be as easy as writing an essay on schnitzel.

tacos, parve things

i met the new york counterpart to la fachada tonight. it's complicatedly named, taqueria y fonda la mexico (aptly nicknamed, "the taco joint that (friend) maria won't shut up about").
tasty it was
i had a chickens torta.
friends maria and colette had tacos (which i would prolly get given the chance to go back... they were seriously holding their own against fachada, jg)
friend tony was threatened with his manhood, had he not finished the bowling ball sized burrito that this place serves up.
it was a crazy night INDEED.

furthschmore

i need to find a parve dessert to make for rosh hashanah this friday. parve dessert? me? based on recent experiences
i really don't think i'm capable of baking anything with less then seven sticks of butter.

...and speaking of desserts, friend marsha sent me a recipe that i will be sure to include in the next bake fest...

vanilla chocolate wafers

Ingredients

Makes about 4 1/2 dozen

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder

Directions

  1. Sift flour and salt into a medium bowl; set aside. Put butter and sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, and mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low. Mix in egg yolk and vanilla. Gradually add flour mixture; mix until just combined, about 1 minute.
  2. Remove half of the dough; set aside. Add cocoa powder to remaining dough; mix on low speed until well combined. Turn out chocolate dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Roll into a 10-inch log, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Repeat with reserved vanilla dough. Wrap each log in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until slightly firm, at least 30 minutes.
  3. Press handle of a long wooden spoon into side of chocolate log, making an indentation along its length. Roll handle into and then away from log, creating an apostrophe shape. Repeat with vanilla log. Fit logs together; press lightly to seal. Gently roll into a 2-inch-diameter log. Wrap in plastic wrap, and freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut log into 1/4-inch-thick rounds; space 1 inch apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. If dough becomes too soft to slice cleanly, return to freezer until firm.
  5. Bake until firm to the touch, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to wire racks; let cool. Cookies can be stored in airtight containers at room temperature up to 3 days.

ok. it's past my bedtime. darryl is going to kick my derriere tomorrow morning.

bake fest

for the start of the school year, i had a little dessert party for the percussionists
(it was also known as bake fest '09)

the menu:

lemon cake

rugelach raspberry, apricot, and walnut filling

chocolate covered strawberries sprinkled with chili pepper

red velvet cupcakes marshmallow cream cheese frosting, walnuts, jimmies

after having one bite, friend peter proposed to me. i guess my baking skillz are just that magical. i think it had to do with paula deen's fantastic frosting recipe:

{a cup of melted marshmallows}
{a stick of butter}
{an 8 ox package of cream cheese}
{a pound of confectioner's sugar}

cornbread

chocolate cookie bars white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips

it was tight.

honestly, is there anything better than a bunch of your closest friends and a TON of baked goodies?

i believe that this is the start of something beautiful...

 and the next day there was rugelach dough left over...
so friend alex came over and we made nutella rugelach. you're jealous.
