second guesses and summer dresses

a politic-free tuesday list

when, as if i suddenly just became my mother, pumpkin scones appeared on the brunch table at the too-early hour of sunday before noon.

after a night of sipping away sandy and eating midnight chicken buns with rob over conversations of chemistry and the future,

and meeting the human behind one of my most favorite blogs, meg.

+++

the smell that is happening in my kitchen right now, as onions and sauerkraut cook down for pierogies. {that when i google "what is the plural form of..." the first guess that comes up is "moose."}

and the other dumplings that i'm working on for the violet's winter issue!

and the live dumpling-making soundtrack that is going on in my living room right now.

+++

the i-woke-up-at-4am bagel topped with the generic brand nutella that has crunchy bits of nougat mixed in.

+++

crisp morning runs.

+++

celebrating the life of elliott carter: remembering the absolutely enjoyable hours spent on his improvisation for solo timpani that got my butt into college, sitting in a box seat when i was five to see my dad play his clarinet concerto, recognizing that, yes, elliott carter spent his 103 years right. rest in piece.

sandy help

a guide to helping with sandy recovery from wherever you are in the world.

listen to amazing music. the record label for some of the most unbelievable new music on the planet, new amsterdam records, had their headquarters destroyed. buy some of their albums* {like my current obsession, one of their newest releases, roomful of teeth} and/or donate to their relief fund here.

eat + cook. most of my favorite restaurants had to close during the storm, and some remain closed. on top of their lost work days, a few are having to do a ton of repair work {like mile end, their bakery and smokehouse were completely destroyed, and one girl, their dumbo store was flooded}. if you're in the city, eat out and tip well. if you're not in the city, buy cookbooks* from new york restaurants. mile end, clinton street baking company, the frankies, shopsin's, and one girl have some of my favorites, but of course there a million more.

drink. breweries and bars were also severely damaged. if you're in brooklyn, come have a drink with me on the sip away sandy bar crawl tomorrow. if you're in other sandy-affected areas, organize your own sip away sandy and remember to tip well. if you're not in a sandy-affected area, see if you can find beer from sixpoint or brooklyn breweries {sixpoint's brewery and brooklyn's new york warehouse were hit hard}.

play music. busk or organize a concert, and do good with your earnings {perhaps send them to one of the organizations listed here here}.

*cough cough chrismukkuh gift ideas!!!

have another idea on how to help?? leave it in the comments section!!

this is me.

that's not entirely true.

this is me when i've had time to think about makeup* and spend an embarrassing amount of energy curling my hair. and i'm wearing my new glasses and my current favorite sweater. {part of this event is called convincing mum to let me get a perm and that purchasing these glasses was not an irresponsible idea because look at how happy these material things are making me.}

so in other words, this is me on a really good day conducting a social experiment called "trying to understand how there are people in the world who post photos on the internet of themselves every day without getting sheepish."

*while i have my fashion blogger pants on right now, and since no shame november is right around the corner, i will take this opportunity to tell you that i am newly in love with what is on my lips in the above photo: clinique's almost lipstick in flirty honey. i am obsessed. so go to the mall and buy stuff.

and to balance out this out-of-character bit on hair and makeup, i will now direct you back to my comfort zone of contemporary vocal music: roomful of teeth. their entire album is streaming for the week. listen, it is shocking.

the happy week.

a dinner here, a lunch there, a bike ride here, a run there. a carnegie concert, a carnegie concert, an intimate little village concert. with people i love, people i adore, and people i admire to bits.

a letter from a young reader and a letter from india. new mustard from münchen and late night matzoh balls.

like the surprise few fries at the bottom of a happy meal, this week was undoubtedly a best.
